The traditional music of the Ivory Coast have many ethnic groups, which include Akan that is made up of 42.1%, Voltaic is made up of 17.6%, the Northern Mandes is made up of 16.5%, Krous made up of 11%, the Southern Mandes is made up of 10%, and other 2.8% (which includes 30,000 Lebanese and 45,000 French in 2004). The settlers community makes up to 20% of the population of over 6 million. An estimated 65 native languages are spoken in the country. Dyula acts as a trade language and it is commonly spoken by Muslims.

Each of the ethnic groups has a folk music tradition, which most are shown strong vocal polyphony (a common characteristic of the African music), the talking drums are commonly known among the Nzema tribe, who are also known for their abissa purification dance as part of their popular Zoblazo dance music of Meiway.
