Elfriede Gerstl

Elfriede Gerstl was born on the 16^th June 1932; she died on the 9^th April 2009. She was an Austrian author and a Holocaust-survivor. Elfriede Gerstl was a Jewish; she was born in the city of Vienna, where his father worked as a dentist.

Elfriede Gerstl survived the war years by hiding in many locations with the mother. After the war, she started her study of medicine and psychology at the University of Vienna, though she ended her studies after the birth of her daughter.

Elfriede Gerstl became more engaged with her writing in the 1950s, and she published her first work in the journal, Neue Wege in the year 1955.

The first book she published was called Gesellschaftsspiele mit mir, which was a collection of poems and short prose, which came out in the year 1962.

She published works on the following genres; essays, poems and short stories and she was a devoted feminist ansd most of the works she did focused on the address of the gender roles.

She was the receiver of the Erich Fried Prize and the Georg Trakl Poetry Award in the year 1999.

On her death in the year 2009, the minister of culture of the country, Claudia Schmeid said that the German-language literature had lost a crucial contributor in the country.
