Biography
Paula Anna Maria Wessely was born in the city of Vienna; she was the daughter of the butcher Carl Wessely, the younger brother of the late actress of the Burgtheatre Josephine Wessely.
Maria Wessely attended the Vienna State Academy of Music and Performing Arts from the year 1922 and later the Max Reinhardt Seminar. She made her first appearance at the Volkstheater in the year 1924.
She became a member of the New German Theatre group in Prague in the year 1926, and it was there that she performed with her future husband Attila Hörbiger in Les Nouveaux Messieurs by Croisset and Flers. She moved back to the Volkstheatre in the year 1927 and played a role in Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea as well as Wedekind's Spring Awakening.
She moved to Theater in der Josefstadt under director Max Reinhardt after she was denied of a role of Jenny in Brecht's Threepenny Opera in the year 1929.
In her last year on earth, she led a secluded life in her town, Vienna and passed through a major depression, which was as a result of the death of her husband. She quietly celebrated her 93rd birthday on 20th January 2000, with her only daughter and grandchildren at her residence. She suffered an acute attack of bronchitis in April of that same year and was admitted to a hospital in the city of Vienna. Maria Wessely died on the 11th May at the age of 93, peacefully in her sleep.
