Arthur Shirley was born on the 12th August 1886; he died on
the 24th November 1967. He was an Australian actor, writer, producer
and a director of film and theatre. He was one of the members of the country to
enjoy success as an actor in the Hollywood.

Arthur Shirley was born Henry Raymond Shirley in Hobart to civil servant
Henry Shirley and Sarah Ann, née
Morton. When he was 6 years of age, he joined the semi-professional troupe of
entertainers that travelled to Tasmania in a two horse caravan.
He moved to the city
of Melbourne in the year 1904. His first role in the theatre of the country was
a three-line part in Sweet Nell of Old Drury in the year 1905. He spent the
next 2 years moving from Victoria and NSW with the company called John Cosgrove
Company. He announced he was going to appeared in a play written specially for
him.
He got married to a
New Zealand singer called Ellen Newcomb Hall at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney
on the 22nd December 1913; they separated in the year 1920 and
divorced in the year 1940.
In June of the year
1914, Arthur Shirley together with the
wife moved to the United States and it was there that he was signed by Kalem
Company and Universal Studios. He played major roles in American movies like One Man's Evil in the year 1915), Bawb O' Blue Ridge in the year 1916, The Fall of a Nation in the year 1916
and Branding Broadway in 1918.
He moved back to
Sydney in April 1920 to found his own movie company and he finally set up as
Rose Bay having the Slogan Moving Pictures Made in Australia for the World. He
started with the movie called The
Throwback, but could not complete it.
He moved to London in
the year 1927 and there he tried exhibiting his directorial skills to United
Kingdom audiences, but he was not given the chance until he completed the
payment of the requisite duty. He did not have the money so this never
happened.
Arthur Shirley got married to Frances Clayton in
the year 1934 after he believed his first wife to be dead. He moved back to
Sydney alone in August of that same year.
He adopted a son in
the year 1940 and contested the 1943 federal election as an independent
candidate for East Sydney but he never won. Arthur Shirley dedicated hi retirement to archeology and ancient Egypt.
Arthur Shirley died at Rose Bay in the year 1967 and was buried at
Waverley Cemetery.
