The nyatiti is a 5 to 8 stringed plucked musical instrument
from Kenya. The musical instrument is of the lyre family of musical
instruments. The nyatiti is a classical musical instrument that is played by
the Luo people of the Western Kenya, exclusively in the Benga music.
The
musical instrument is about 2 to3 feet long. The player of the musical
instrument holds the instrument to his chest while he is seated on a low stool.
Normally, the musical instrument is played along with the oporo, a curved horn.
Mostly, the version of the musical instrument that is played
by the Luo people is 8-stringed. The stool that the player of the instrument
sits on is the traditionally called ‘Orindi’. It is a 3-legged stool that is as
low as the shim level of the player of the instrument. The player of the
musical instrument sits down and puts down the musical instrument in front of
him. There is a round-iron ring that is on the toe of the player that
manufactures beats as he hits the lower bar of the musical instrument with it.
There is also a bell that shakes until the playing time is over that are found
on the same leg, the bell is known as ‘Gara’. Most players of the musical
instrument wear a headgear known as ‘Kondo’ on the head normally manufactured
from some skin of animal. The dancers of the music from the instrument tie
‘Owalo’ on their waist as they dance the beautiful songs of the nyatiti.
