Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavian of which Serbia
was part, as not an Eastern Bloc country, but also a member of the Non-Aligned
Movement and as such, was far more open to western influences compared to other
socialist states. The western- affected pop and rock music was socially
recognized, and the Yugoslav rock scene was well established and covered in the
media, which comprised many magazines, radio and Television concerts.
Paralleling the disintegration of Yugoslavia due to the civil war, its rock
scene also stopped to exist. And during the 90s the fame of the rock music
weakened in Serbia, and though many main mainstream artists tried to sustain
their fame, an underground and independent music scene established. The 2000s
mark the renewal of the mainstream scene.
