Rock
music spread to Korea from the Eighth United States Army (EUSA) bases after the
Korean War. Shin Jung-hyeon, on many occasions is known as the Godfather of
Korean rock, and he start playing the renowned rock covers for American
servicemen in the 1950s, particularly being noted for his song Iron Butterfly’s
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Shin created his own pattern of psychedelic rock in the 60s
and 70s and recorded albums with many bands such as the Men, the Add 4, and Yup
Juns, and wrote songs and played on a record with renowned singers such as Jang
Hyun and Kim Chu Ja, and lesser known singers such as Kim Jung Mi. after
rejecting an order from then president park Chung-hee to write a song praising
the president, Park stopped Shin’s music and finally imprisoned him for
marijuana possession. The imprisonment of Shin bring down the production of
Korean rock, but other musicians like Saulrim appeared during the late 70s,
before the dance music came to controlled Korean renowned music in the 80s.
