Metal
has a little but not insignificant presence in Singapore’s music scene. For the
past few periods, Singapore has seen a fast growth of metal ensembles making
Singapore a stop for them to perform. Ensembles such as Iron Maiden, Slayer,
Exodus, Helloween, Morbid Angel, and
Dream Theatre have played in Singapore to receptive masses, at places such as
Fort Canning Park and Singapore Indoor Stadium. Small to medium scale shows are
held almost every week at places like BlackHotel 212 or Substation. Very
recent, on 15 February 2011, Iron Maiden played to a population of 12,000 at
the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Metal
ensembles in Singapore run the gamut and include ensembles from many differing
subgenres. Though, it is not rare for ensembles from the more underground
genres to sight ensembles from more mainstream genres with scorn.
The
Singapore’s mainstream media has a little support for the metal. Though, metal
music of this current generation is lucky to be featured occasionally on Brade Bo’s concert, Vicious Volume of
RIA 89.7fm. Oshiego was also among in
Lime Magazine’s 30 Hottest Indigenous Acts, a compilation CD, with the song Now
Suffer initially from the titular EP.
The
indigenous metal scene in Singapore is not daunted by the lack of assistance
from the indigenous mainstream media, and has formed its own methods of distributing
information by using renowned internet based social mediums such as the
Twitter, blogs and Facebook. One well-known organization is heavy metal
Tribune, which features many indigenous metal artists as well as other from
other parts of the countries, primarily to allow each area to reach out to meet
one another, while providing indigenous metal heads to known what they are up
against. Heavy Metal Tribune also gives show organizers with a platform to
publicize their activities, through their Facebook wall or its monthly
publication.
