The popular canto (renowned chant) which emerged around the year 1975, eschewed current instrumentation which include the electric instruments, allowing only the local patterns and beats, this can be compared to the Spanish-language singer-songwriter improvement such as tropicalismo and nueva cancion nueva trova. Daniel Viglietti was the most important Uruguayan advocate of the canto renowned; his chant known as A Desalambrar which became an international well-known classic. The canto renowned toped in about 1977.

Alfredo Zitarrosa, Jose Carbajal (Uruguyan artist) (El Sabalero) and Los Olimarenos were the Uruguayan musicians that involved that make canto more renowned.
