The
Vallenato arose in the Valledupat on Colombia’s Atlantic coast and only gained popularity
elsewhere in the country in the year 1980. The origins are masked in the
mystery but it also begun with Francisco el Hombre, who allegedly conquered
Satan in a musical contest. Based around the accordion, the guacharaca, and the
caja vallenata (which is a larger version of the bongo), vallenato has long
been connected with cumbia. The powerful artist such as Alejo Duran and more
currently, the Alfredo Gutierrez and Lisandro Meza, in addition to the
accordion, the bass guitar has been as common part of the vallenato groups
since it was established by the Caliya in the mid-1960s. The most current
modernization of the vallenato occurred in the year 1993 when Carlos Vives that
released Clasicos de la provincial, converted him into a star and changed the
face of the vallenato.
