Mandarin
led the language of cinematography until the appearance of Cantonese counterparts
in the mid-1970s. Several singers from the Taiwan migrated to Hong Kong making
a spectrum of Mandarin pop. The era ended in its height with the Teresa Teng.
Her songs were well-known even in mainland China. Mandarin pop will likely
continue to gain populatity, especially after the 1997 handover that made
Mandarin one of the standard languages under the Basic Law. One of the TV
series that rival the 60s/70s mandopop club scene in Hong Kong is the TVB series
Glittering Days.
