was characterized by the Cantonese opera and English pop. Prominent singers
like Cheng Kuan-min, Tang Kee-chan. The godfather of Cantopop Roman Tam
establishes important strides in the industry. The youth started to gravitate
towards the Cantonese pop in the 70s.

Around
the year 1971, Sandra Lang was invited to sing the first Cantonese TV song, the
Yuanfen of a wedding that cries and laughs. This song was the making of the
legendary songwriter Joseph Koo and the songwriter Yip Siu-dak. The genre was released
to exceptional levels with virtually every TV drama using localized cantopop
songs. Another big name composer was Paula Tsui.
In
1980s, the flow of the Hong Kong pop wave increased rapidly. The music scene
was characterized by pop icons Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, and Danny
Chan. The industry used Cantopop songs in TV drama and movies, with some of the
biggest soundtracks coming from films like a better tomorrow. There were also
several Cantopop songs that were reformed from Japanese music.
While
TV theme songs are still a significant part of the Hong Kong music, the arrival
of the Four Heavenly Kings took Cantopop a stage higher. Presently, Cantopop is
leading form of music with strong associations to pop tradition. Record
companies have had a majority stake in the part, and Hong Kong is measured with
the central hub of Cantopop in the world.
