The
German classical is among the most performed in the world; German singers
include some of the most accomplished and famous in history, among them are
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schuman, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van
Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Johannes Brahms. Richard Wagner, born in
Salzuburg (now in Austria), was among many opera singers who initiated the
field of German opera.
The
beginning of what is now seen as German music could be dated back to the 12th
century compositions of mystic Abbess Hildegard of Bingen, who wrote a variety
of hymns and other types of Christian music.
