The yunluo
is a set of often ten small tuned gongs installed in a wooden frame, having
each of the gongs being about 9 cm to 12 cm in diameter and the height of the
frame being just about 52 cm. the musical instruments are widely of equal
diameter but the thickness of the materials differs, the thicker gong in the
group produce a higher sound pitch. The musical instrument is usually found in
the wind and percussion groups in the Northern Province of China. Ancient
drawings also portray a smaller version of the musical instrument with just
five gongs that was held in the hand by a handle by one hand and performed with
the other hand.
A
modernized version of the musical instrument has been developed from the
traditional version of the musical instrument for use in larger modern Chinese
orchestra. It is larger with about 29 or more gongs of varying diameters. The
height of the instrument is about 2 meters including the two legs with which
the musical instrument stands on the floor; it is about 1.4 meters wide.
The
traditional version of this musical instrument is sometimes called ‘shimianluo’
to differentiate it from the modern version of the musical instrument. A very
analogous musical instrument known as ‘ulla’ that is derived from the yunluo is
found in the music of Korea. The nhã nhạc music of
Vietnam uses an analogous musical instrument with three gongs known as ‘tam âm la’.
