The sea organ is an architectural
object that is located in Zadar, Croatia and an experimental musical instrument
that performs music by way of sea waves and tubes and situated beneath a set of
large marble steps.
Chaotic reconstruction work embarked
on in an attempt to repair the devastation Zadar suffered during the World War
II that twisted much of the sea front into unbroken monotonous concrete wall.
The waves manufacture somewhat indiscriminate but harmonic sounds. The device
was produced by the architect known as Nikola Basic as part of the project to
redesign the new city coast and the site was opened to the members of the
public on the 15th of April 2005.The sea organ has drawn tourists
and locals alike. Also, white marble steps leading down to the water were
constructed later. Concealed under these steps that both guide and invite is a
system of polyethylene tubes and resonating cavity, which turns the site into a
big musical instrument, performed by the wind and the sea.In 2006, this musical
instrument was awarded with the prize ex-aequo of the fourth edition of the
European prize for Urban Public Space.
