The phorminx was one of the oldest of
the ancient Greek stringed musical instruments. The musical instrument is
analogous to the kithara and the lyre. The phorminx is made up of seven
strings. The musical instrument is richly decorated arms and has a
crescent-shaped sound box. It perhaps almost originated from Mesopotamia.
Though is seems like the instrument have been common in Homer’s day,
accompanying the rhapsodes, it was displaced in historical times by the seven
stringed kithara.

The term phorminx has continued to be
used as an archaism in the poetry of the country. The name of this musical
instrument is also sometimes used in both ancient and modern day writing to
mean the entire four musical instruments that are in the lyre family of musical
instruments.
