the mid-20th century, the Virgin Islands were largely culturally
remote from international famous music, in the 1960’s a growth in the tourism

music, which was popularized by the growth of mass media in the islands like
the television and radio.

were rarely mainstream interests, while the islands youth formed groups and the
dance bands that played patterns famous over the Caribbean, mainly the Latin,
Jamaican and Trinidadian influenced salsam reggae, steelplan and soca, the
large Puerto Rican population in the Virgin Islands kept the famous music from
Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic a major part of the islands industry.
