The
first calypso star from the island was Lloyd Prince Thomas, who moved to New
York City in the mid-1940 and he continued to perform for over twenty years.
Charles Harris, the Mighty Zebra (which is famous in Trinidadian calypsonian)
influentially performed in the Virgin Islands in the year 1950, he came for the
carnival in the year 1952, and then stayed and also play at the Virgin Isles
Hotel with the LaMotta Brothers Band. The LaMotta group which was led by Bill
LaMotta, was a very famous band that recorded many albums and backed Mighty
Zebra on a 1957 album for RCA records. The rest of the major early of the
calypso band from the Virgin Islands was the Fabulous McClevertys, who
travelled all over the East Coast of the United States at the height of the
calypso craze in 1950’s.
Also,
another famous Virgin Islands calypsonian is Irvin Brownie Brown, who has held
the islands carnival and has been a leading composer, radio entertainer, MC and
drummer for several years.
