Kouxian is a generic Chinese term for
any type of jaw harp. The jaw harp is a plucked idiophone in which the lamella
is mounted in a small frame and the open mouth of the player serves as the
resonance chamber of the instrument.

The Chinese jaw harp may be made up
of idiophones that are lashed together at one end and spread in a fan
formation. They may be produced from the bamboo or a metal alloy like the
brass. The modern version of this musical instrument with three or more
idiophones may be tuned to the 1st few tones of the minor pentatonic
scale.
The musical instrument like was
fabricated in Asia, but performed all through china, it is particularly popular
among the non-Han ethnic groups of the southwestern china, like the Yunnan,
Guangxi and Guizhou. Various Chinese regions have many vernacular names for the
musical instrument; one of such names is ‘hoho’.
