The
Virgin Island music is reflected long-standing in the Western Indian culture to
draw to the island nations to the south, the islands African heritage and
European colonial history, also in the recent North American influences. Thus,
the United States Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands are politically different;
they maintain a close cultural links. From the neighbours, the Virgin Island
has imported different pan-Caribbean genres of music which includes calypso
from Trinidad and reggae from Jamaica.
The
main indigenous form of music is the scratch group (which is also known as
fungi band in the British Virgin Islands), which use improvised instrument such
as gourds and washboards to make a type of music that is known as the quelbe.
Virgin island folk song that is known as cariso is also popular, and also St.
Thomas bamboula. The quadrille is the traditional folk dance of the islands,
and these include varieties such as St. Croix’s Imperial Quadrille and St.
Thomas Flat German Quadrille. The Heritage Dancers are a respected dance group
that perform the traditional folk dancers from the Virgin Islands and across
the globe.
