Virgin Islander of the traditional music has been in existence since the mid-20th
century; though some of the traditions like scratch bands remain vibrant. The
problems that led to this change include the rise of the tourism industry, the
switch of American tourists from Cuba to the Virgin Islands that follow the
1959 rebels and the growth of the industries based mass radio, television and
recorded music. These change (diluted) local traditions and (diverted) younger
generations from becoming involved in the traditional music, because famous
patterns came to be viewed as having more respect, class and income.
