The musical instrument is made up of
a chanter playing the melody and a drone, but the latter is not essentially
functional. Though the instrument descended from either mouth-blown bagpipes,
bellows were added to the musical instrument in the 19th century. It
is said that Joseph Faure, of Saint-Martin-de-Fugeres en Haute-Loire, first
applied a bellows to the cabrette. Faure, a carpenter that was struck with a
lung disease, was stimulated when he used a bellows start a fire.
