The bousine is a small and droneless bagpipe that is found in the south of Normandy. The musical instrument is of Saxon origin. It arrived in Normandy in the 13th century. Latinists believe that the name of the musical instrument comes from the Latin word ‘Bûcina’ which means trompette. Meanwhile, it may also have come from the Old Norse Buss meaning conduit.
The musical instrument is part of the family of Norman bagpipe that also includes the loure and the haute loure.
