The aburukuwa is an open drum of the
Akan people and the Asante people of Ghana. The musical instrument has the
shape of a bottle and the skin of the instrument is held on by pegs. The
aburukuwa is often played with the use of curved sticks. The sound of the
instrument is analogous to the birdsong of a bird that has the same name as the
instrument.

The musical instrument is the
smallest of the three drums that are used by the Asente people during rituals
and festivals. The aburukuwa and its relative drums; the Apentemma and the
Kwadum, were covered typically by red and black felt to represent blood and
death. The musical instrument is used during wartime, although it has become
linked to the worship of the ancestor and funerals.
