Paul Henreid was born Paul Georg Julius Freiherr von Hernried Ritter von
Wasel-Waldingau on the 10th January 1908; he died on the 29th
March 1992. He was a Trieste-born American actor and film
director. He is best known for the role of Jeremiah Durrance opposite Bette
Davis in Now, Voyager in the
year 1942 and the role of Victor Laszlo opposite Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey
Bogart in Casablanca in the
year 1942.

Life and Career
Paul Henreid was born in the Italian city of Trieste, which was part of
the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the son of Maria-Luise
Lendecke and Baron Carl Alphons, an aristocratic Viennese banker. He studied
theatre in the city of Vienna and made his first appearance on the stage under
Max Reinhardt’s direction. He started his movie career acting in the German
movies in the 1930s. in the year 1935, Paul
Henreid moved fromn Austria to great Britain a year after the 1934 Austrian
Civil War that finished with the installation of Austrofascism.
A little role in film called Goodbye, Mr. Chips in the year 1939 and third
billing as a Nazi Major in the film called Night Train to Munich in the year
1940 led to his moving to the Hollywood career. Paul Henreid appeared also in his two major movies in the year 1942. He
made often appearances in movies in the 1940s, in the early part of the 1950s
he started directing for both the film and the TV. His credits films are; Between Two Worlds of the year 1944, The Spanish Main of the year 1945, Of Human Bondage of the year 1946, Song of Love of the year 1947, Thief of Damascus of the year 1952, Siren of Bagdad of the year 1953, and
Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
of the year 1961. His TV credits are; Alfred
Hitchcock Presents, Maverick,
Bonanza and The Big Valley.
Paul Henreid was married to Elizabeth
"Lisl" Gluck and they both had two daughters together. Paul Henreid died on pneumonia in Santa
Monica and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
