Life and Career
Fritz Kortner was born in the city of Vienna as Fritz Nathan Kohn, and he studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. When he graduated, Fritz Kortner joined Max Reinhardt in Berlin in the year 1911 and then Leopold Jessner in the year 1916.
After his success performance in the Transfiguration of the year 1919, Fritz Kortner became one of the best known German actors and the country’s foremost performer of the Expressionist works. He appeared in more than 90 movies from the year 1916.
With the Nazis coming up, Fritz Kortner left Germany in the year 1933, he fiurst moved to the city of Vienna and then later he moved to Great Britain and finally he moved to US, and it was there that he found work as an actor and a director of the theatre. He moved back to Germany in the year 1949, and it was there that he became popular for innovative stage and direction of classics by William Shakespeare and Moliere like Richard III of the year 1964.
Fritz Kortner died in the city of Munich at the age of 78 in the year 1970.
