She was an Australian writer under the penname Waif Wander and W.W. Mary Helena Fortune was one of the earliest
detective writers on earth. She was one of the earliest women of the world to
write from the viewpoint of the officer.
Mary Helena Fortune was born around the year 1833 in Belfast, Ireland;
she traveled with the father to Canada in the city of Melbourne city. She got
married to Joseph Fortune on the 25th March 1851 and they had a son
together. When her father left Canada to Australia she moved with him and she
left the husband behind and moved to Australia with the son. She arrived in the
city of Melbourne, Victoria on the 3rd October 1855 and in November
of the year 1856, Mary Helena Fortune gave birth to her second son. In January
of the year 1858, her first son died. She got married to Percy
Rollo Brett on the 25th October 1858.
Over 40 years, Mary Helena Fortune wrote more than 500
detective stories.
