George Landen Dann was born on the 1st January 1904; he died
on the 6th June 1977. He was an Austrian playwright, writer and a
draftsman. He is best known for numerous award-winning and critically commended
plays like In Beauty It Is Finished,
Fountains Beyond, Caroline Chisholm and The Orange Grove. Over the course of
his lifetime, he wrote several dozens of published and unpublished plays. The
George Landen Dann Award was brought up
in the year 1992, and it was awarded to the promising young playwrights of the
country until the year 2007.
Landen Dann was the son of George William Dann
and Mildred Challis Dann. He had an elder sister Isabel Challis born on the 23rd
December 1901 and two younger sisters called Dorothy Rose born in the year
1905, and Mildred Matilda born in the year 1908. Mildred died the same year she
was born.

He went to the
Brisbane Grammar School and he entered the survey office of the Queensland Land
Department in the year 1920 at the age of 16 and it was there that he passed
through the training as a draftsman. It was believed that he started writing at
the same time he started his draftsman training. Dann joined the Brisbane City Council as a
draftsman in the department of water supply in the year 1924.
