The galgo is traditional drum from Korea. The musical
instrument has an hourglass-shaped wooden body and double drum heads that are
of identical diameter and it is analogous to the janggu. Compared to the
janggu, this musical instrument is fitted with a sound adjusting device that is
different from that of the janggu. The musical instrument also uses thinner
drum stick and can be struck with the use of bamboo sticks that are known as
chae, but mallet shaped gunchae is not in use. The pitch of the musical instrument
can be controlled on both sides of the musical instrument instead of only one
pitch per side on the janggu.
The
musical instrument is prominent after the rule of King Yeongio in the Joseon
dynasties and is always talked about in the Jinyeoneuigwe. Today, this musical
instrument has fallen out of use by traditional musicians and if one wants to
see the musical instrument, it will be found in the National Center for Korean
Traditional Performing Arts.
Jiegu of the Chinese empire that was adopted from the central
Asian region of kucha during the Tang dynasty is the version of the musical
instrument from which the galgo has been derived from. The Japanese version of
the musical instrument called kakko that is used in the gagaku music, is also
derived from the Chinese version of the musical instrument.
