Fasto Tarifa

Dr. Fastos Tarifa was born in the year 1954. He is a social scientist from Albania. He was also a former diplomat.

Education

Tarifa is with a double doctorate degree with Ph. D in sociology from the University of North Carolina at the Chapel Hill and a Doctorate degree in Political science from the University of Tirana. He was formerly an Inter alia, a lecturer and a research manager and a distinguished visiting fellow ever since the year 1981, as soon as he became part of the school of Political Science and Law at the University of Tirana. He was given the award of a Fulbright Fellowship at the department of Sociology at the UNC Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Career

Tarifa worked as an ambassador of the country, Albania to the Netherlands from the year 1998 to the year 2001 and to the US from the year 2001 to the year 2005. Presently he is a professional lecturer of Sociology and International Relations at the University of New York Tirana. He has also taught and has conducted research at the University of Tirana, The European University of Tirana, The Institute of Social Studies at The Hague, the Webster University the Campbell University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Eastern Michigan University. He also delivered class sections at the following higher institutions in the world; Duke University, Stanford University, New York University, Harvard University, Brown University, University of California at Berkeley, Tufts University, University of Essex, University of Amsterdam and many other institutions.

Tarifa has written, co-written and edited about 45 books and over 90 journal articles. The book and articles he wrote have covered some topics that range from democratic transition and social problems in the Eastern Part of Europe to the Development of Human race and current international affairs. He was the founding editor of Sociological Analysis in the year 1998, an innovative, International scholarly journal that is being published at Chapel Hill, NC that he edited for about 15 years. He works as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal of Social Sciences and the Journal of Applied Social Sciences.

He will be most popular as the leader of a campaign to introduce the discipline of sociology into the higher education of the country, Albania. Generally, he is seen as the founder of Sociological studies in the country and he is one of the most prominent social scientists in the country. He has already been given the award of the father of sociology in the country, a moniker he has widely resisted. Dr. Tarifa is also a founding member of the Albanian Academy of Arts and Sciences in the year 2011.
