The arghul is a traditional Arabic musical instrument. The
arghul has been used since the ancient Egyptian times and it is still being
used as a traditional musical instrument in Egypt.
The arghul is a double-pipe, single-reed wood wind musical
instrument that is made up of two tubes; a melody pipe with about 5 to 7 holes
and a longer drone pipe. The tone of the musical instrument is analogous to
that of the clarinet, but a bit reedier. Unlike the analogous mijwiz, the
musical instrument has only fingering holes on one of the pipes of the
instrument, and the drone pipe of the instrument has a detachable length that
permits the player of the instrument to change the pitch of the instrument’s
drone.
This musical instrument is player in Egypt and some other
Arabian countries as an accompanying musical instrument to the belly dancing
and some other types of Arabic musical performances. Circular breathing is a
crucial part of the performing of the musical instrument. There are three types
of the arghul; the small arghul, the medium arghul and the larger version of
the musical instrument.
