Extremadura has been the poorest part of Spain, and it has the largely countryside area recognized for the Portuguese influence on its music. In the northern areas of Spain, there is a rich collection of tabor pipe music. The zambomba rubbing-drum (like the Portuguese sarronca or Brazilian cuica) which is played by pulling on a rope that is inside the drum. This is found all over in Spain. The jota is popular, here played with triangles, accordions, tambourines, zambombas, guitars and castanets.
