Extremadura
has been the poorest part of Spain, and it has the largely countryside area
recognized for the Portuguese influence on its music. In the northern areas of
Spain, there is a rich collection of tabor pipe music. The zambomba rubbing-drum (like the Portuguese
sarronca or Brazilian cuica)
which is played by pulling on a rope that is inside the drum. This is found all
over in Spain. The jota is popular, here played with triangles, accordions, tambourines,
zambombas, guitars and castanets.
