The
Christian missions gave the first organized musical training in the country,
introducing to light many of the current country’s earliest artists which
include Enoch Sontonga, who wrote the
national anthem which is Nkosi Sikelel
iAfrika. In the end of the 19th century, South African towns
such as Cape Town were big enough to bring foreign artists, particularly
American ragtime players. African American spirituals were promoted in the
1890s by Orpheus McAdoo’s Jubilee Singers.
