The
recorded musical record of the Serbs is dated back to the medieval period.
Church music was performed all over Serbia choirs or individual singers. The
songs is usually performed at the time were it is originated from Osmoglanik; it is a collection of
religious songs dedicated to Jesus. These songs were repeated over the course
of eight weeks in a recurring design. Some of the composers from this period
include the Serb, Kir Stefan, Nikola the Serb, Isaiah, and the Serb. Together,
they belong to the current musical custom which is known as Serbo-Byzantine
school.
Apart
from church music, the medieval period in Serbia include folk music, about
which tittle is documented, and the court music. During the administration of
the Nemanjic dynasty artists played
an essential role in the royal court, and it was known as sviralnici, glumci and praskavnici. The rulers are known for the
musical supporter which includes Duard
Brankovic and Stefan Dusan.
During
the fall of Serbia under the Ottoman administration the introduction of
instruments that would further cause Serbian music to flourish.
The
medieval musical instruments comprised the lutes, cymbals, horns, trumpets,
psalteries, and drums. The traditional folk instruments include the cemane (kemenche), gajde, dajre, kaval,
diple, tamburitza, tapan (davul), gusle, frula, zurla (zurna) and many
others.
