The
native ethnic group of Liberia can be linguistically divided into three parts;
those in the east who speak the isolate Gola language and the Mel languages
(particularly Kissi) and those who are from the west that speak Kru languages
(particularly Bassa). And also the Mande people who will be added (the Kpelle
are Liberia’s largest ethnic group) in the north as well as Liberian deports
(Americo-Liberians, Congo, Caribbean).

The
music of Liberia make use of a particular vocal accord, repetition an
call-and-response songs structure as well as such typical West African elements
as ululation and the polyrhythm typical of rhythm in sub-Saharan Africa. The
Christian music of Liberia was brought by the American missionaries and
Christian songs are presently sung in a style that combines the American
harmonies with the West African language, rhythm and call-and-response setup.
The
traditional music is done during wedding, naming ceremonies, royal activities
and other special events, as well as ordinary children’s songs, work songs and
lullabies. Pop and rap music are also performed in indigenous languages
throughout the country.
