The timbrel or tabret is the principal musical instrument of
percussion of the people of Israel. The musical instrument is analogous to the
modern tambourine.
The term timbrel is used in the Old Testament in both
singular and plural manner, so as to recommend the former referred to a hoop or
metal over which was spread a parchment head; while the later was probably used
to designate the tambourine with jangles or bells at intervals in hoops. The
people of Israel learnt how to use the musical instrument during their sojourn
in Egypt. The musical instrument was a favorite instrument for women and was
used with dances, as by Miriam, to accompany melodies of victory, or with the
harp at banquets and processions, this musical instrument was one of the instruments
that were played by King David and his music players when he danced before the
Ark of the Covenant. The musical instrument was used at the sacrificial rites
in the valley of Hinnom.
The musical instrument was introduced to Europe during the
crusades. The English men adopted the name tambourine for the musical
instrument. A painting from Persia circa 1256 portrays a round, hand-held frame
drum that has jangle affixed around the frame. A 1431 to 1438 Italian
bas-relief sculpture by Luca della Robbia portrays the same musical instrument,
the jangles uniquely being metal discs within hole that are around the frame of
the musical instrument.
