This
musical instrument is said to be a friction drum and is also known as
“Pernacchiatore”, “Puti-Puti”, “Pignato”, “Cute-Cute”, “Cupellone”,
“Pan-bomba”.
The
musical instrument is made up of a sound box, a bamboo cane, a film of skin or
a heavy cloth. The sound box of the instrument is ornamented along the edge
with the use of coloured ribborns, could have been produced of an earthware
pan, as in the putipu.
The
lower extreme of the bamboo cane was put in a hole bored in the middle of the
membrane; two things were knotted tightly and fixed on the superior edge of the
instrument’s sound box.
Rubbing
the bamboo cane down and up with the wet hand, vibration are induced in the
skin that are amplified by the air inside the instrument’s sound box,
manufacturing the characteristic
humoristic and disquieting sound.
