Martinique
music has a tradition that is similar to that of their neighboring island known
as Guadeoupe. In spite of their small amount of number, the islands have
produced a large famous music industry, which have achieved the international popularity
after the success of the zouk music in the later 20th century. The popularity
of zouk’s was particularly intense in France where the genre became a
significant sign of identity for the Martinique and Guadeloupe. The origin of
zouk’s is from folk music of Martinique and Gaudeloupe, especially Martinican
beguine, Guadelopan gwo ka and chouval bwa. There is also a clear influence of
the pan-Caribbean calypso custom and Haitian kompa.
