CETERONE: Italian Musical instrument

The ceterone was an enlarged and bass extended version of cittern, the counterpart of the chitarrone as development of the lute that have been traced back to 1520s, though no firm evidence exists for the musical instrument prior to the end of that century.

Like the cittern, this musical instrument was constructed with a flat-backed body in the shape of a teardrop, with a single large rose and had attached metal frets and used metal strings. The unfretted bass strings of the musical instrument were fixed to a neck extension, the musical instrument rounding up probably as much as 1.5 meters in length. A single original example of the instrument exists in Museo Bardini in Florence, traced back to 1600 and carved by the cittern producer called Gironimo Canpi.
