BIFORA: Italian Musical Instrument

The bifora was a Sicilian double reed musical instrument that is of the family of oboe. The instrument is related to the ancient shawm and especially to the piffero of the northern Italian Apennines. Much bigger than the piffero and produced in one piece, the musical instrument was employed along with the drums in the ceremonial processions, especially in the town of San Marco d'Alunzio in the province of Messina. The use of this musical instrument seems to have died out since the 20th century.
