The rich varieties of the musical
instruments are known to come from Georgia. Among the most famous instruments are
blown instruments like soinari, known in
Samegrelo as lachemi (Georgian panpipe), stviri (flute), gudastviri (bagpipe),
string instruments change (harp), chonguri (four stringed unfretted long neck
lute), panduri ( three stringed fretted long neck lute), bowed chuniri, which
is also known as chianuri, and variety of drums. Georgian musical instruments
are traditionally overshadowed by the rich vocal traditions of Georgia, and
subsequently gained much less acceptance from the Georgian (and western)
researchers. Dimitri Arakishvili and particularly Manana Shikaladze contributed
to the study of musical instruments in Georgia. Wind instruments include
larchemi-soinari, slamuri, pilili, gudastviri and striri, brass wind
instruments are sankeri, precussion instruments include chonguri, salamuri,
duduki, doli, daira, tsintsila, gudastviri, doli, daira and diplipito, chuniri,
chiboni, changi, panduri, and zurna.
