word qawwali means utterance in the name of Allah, Qwaali/Ghazal composer Ustad
Sheikh Mohyudean in the year 1920, the Qawwali has undergone a major change in
Fiji, because of lack of classically trained table players that came to Fiji in
the late 1900s, after their failure, some qawwali musicians began playing with
dholak. Players that only knew how to follow the Bhajan, also incorporated a
new pattern of music. When the inclination caught on, some Bhajan singers also
tried their voices in qawwali, and brought the Bihari essentials into the music
that is known as Phagua gayaki an old Bhajan singing pattern in Bihar, India.
The classical qawwali pattern slowly took a back seat to the new pattern of
singing, but it has been snubbed by the purists because of its non-connection
to qawwali.
