The Neue Deutsche Welle is an outgrowth of British punk rock and new wave which arose in the mid-to late 1970s. It was the first successful special German music but was limited in its stylistic device (funny lyrics and surreal composition and production). Though it was a huge success in Germany itself in the 1980s, this was not long-lasting due to over commercialization. Some musicians became popular internationally such as Joachim Witt, Nena and Falcon (from Austria).
