Haiti music is influenced mainly by African settlers through slavery. Styles
special to Haiti include the music that came from vodou ceremonial traditions
and the wildly famous compass. Alan Lomax was the first to record Haitian music
in the year 1937 under the auspices of the library of Congress.

December 21, 1936, Alan Lomax sent a report to the Herbert Putnam who is the
librarian of the Congress about his first impressions after arriving in Haiti.
