In
the beginning of 1920s, Rai music established in Algeria as a mixture of rural
and urban music, often viewed as a way of resistance towards censorship,
several of the straight values of the old rai became renovated with instruments,
synthesizers and recent equipment. Later performers added influences from hip
hop, rock, funk and other styles, creating most notably a pop genre known as
lover’s rai. Performers include Faudel and Rachid Taha. Coining of the city of
Oran, rai shot top of the French, Swiss and Dutch charts in the year 1992 with
the release of Khalde’s single Didi.
