The
traditional music of Georgia comprises of at least 15 regional patterns, known
in Georgian musicology and ethnomusicology as musical dialects. According to
Edisher Garaqanidze, there are 16 regional patterns in Georgia. These 16
regions are traditionally divided into two, eastern and the western Georgian
groups.

The
eastern Georgian group of musical dialect comprises of the two biggest regions
of Georgia, Kartli and Kakheti (Garakanidze united them as Kartli-Kakheti);
several smaller north-east Georgian mountain regions, Khevsuteti, Tusheti,
Khevi, Pshavi, Gudamakari, Mitiuleti; and a southern Georgian region, Meskheti.
Table songs from Kakjeti in eastern Georgia usually feature a long drone bass
with two soloists singing the top two parts. The most popular music pattern in Kakhetian
is the patriotic Chakrulo, which was chosen to follow the Voyager spacecraft in
the year 1977.
The
western Georgian orchestra of musical dialects comprises of the central region
of western Georgia, Imereti; three mountains regions, Racha, Svaneti and Lechkumi;
and three Black Sea coastal regions, Guira, Achara and Samegrelo, Georgian
regional patterns of music are sometimes also grouped into mountain and plain
orchestras. Different researchers (Maisuradze, Arakishvili and Chkhikvadze) differentiate
musical dialects differently, for instance, some do not separate Gudamakari and
Lechkumi as separate dialects, and some consider Kakhet and Kartli to be
separate dialects.
Two
more regions, Saingilo (in the territory of Azerbaijan) and Lazeti (in the
territory of Turkey) are sometimes also included in the features of Georgian
folk music.
