art form is one of the first organized forms of entertainment in Hong Kong. The
art form still exists today in its folk format despite the changing movements
in other industries. There is an argument about the origin(s) of Cantonese
opera, but it is universally accepted that the forerunners of Cantonese opera came
from the northern part of China and slowly settled to the southern region of
the Guangdong in the late 13th century, during the late Southern
Song Dynasty. Beginning in the 1950s, massive waves of settlers fled Shanghai
to destinations such as North Point, boosting its fan base.
