The
zhungdra (Dzongkha, Wylie: gzhung-sgra; which is the centre music) is one of
the two main forms of the Bhutanese traditional music. It was established in
the 17th century and is associated with the traditional music of the
central valleys of Paro, Thimpu and the Punakha, the hearts of the Ngalop cultural
place. While considered the earthly, the lyrics of the zhungdra songs often
tell the Buddhist symbols, like the Yal Legbi Lhadar, which the singer tells of
his past life as a yak slaughtered in connection with the non-Buddhist ritual
in the Gasa District.

The
zhungdra is played by the use of long vocal tones in complex styles which is
slowly decorated with a relatively simple instrumental melody. The untrained
singers, they even use the natural singing ability, typical find it challenging
to sing zhungdra. It has reduced that the popularity of the zhungdra compared
with rigsar, the fast-paced pop Bhutanese music pattern which is based on the
electronic synthesizers.
