The xirula is a small three holed
woodwind musical instrument or flute. The flute is often made of wood and
related to the txistu or the three-hole pipe, but the instrument is more high
pitched and strident. The musical instrument is tuned to C and octave higher
than the silbote. The sound that comes out of the flute has usually been
perceived as a metaphor for the sweet cadences of the songs of birds. Some
scholars opined that the flutes that were found in the Caverns of Isturitz and
Oxozelaia traced back to about 35,000 to 10,000 years ago bear witness to the
early presence of the forerunner of the musical instrument in the province,
while this view has been disagreed on.

The flute is an instrument
characteristic of the Pyrenees. The musical instrument is performed on the
French side of the Basque country, where it together with the atabal provides
the musical background for different traditional dances. Apart from performing
the music for dances, in the former viscountry of soule, the flute may
accompany on both ttun-ttun and the atabal the traditional carnival period
performances that is known as ‘maskaradak and pastorals.
It should be known that other
versions of the musical instrument have been used to the west and the east of
the Basque country up to the 1950s, having some examples occasionally jumping
to the spotlight in special activities.
