A trigonon is a small triangular harp
that is occasionally used by the ancient Greek people and perhaps derived from
the Assyria or Egypt. The musical instrument is thought to be either a version
of the Sambuca or very identical with it.

The musical instrument is represented
on one of the Athenian red-figured vases from Cameiros in the Island of Rhodes,
traced back to the 5th century BCE that are preserved in the British
museum. The triangle is here an irregular one, made up of a narrow base to
which one extreme of the string was attached, while the second side, forming a
little bit obtuse angle with the base, made up of wide and a little bit curved
sound board pierced with holes through which the other end of the strings
passed, being knotted. The 3rd side of the triangle was formed by
the strings of the instrument themselves, the front pillar that in modern
European harps perform such an essential part, being always absent in these
early oriental musical instruments. A small harp of this type having 20 strings
was found at Thebes, Greece in the year 1823.
